Work Experience

Areas of Work (Interim Manager or Consultant)

Management - Leadership or management training - Project management or implementation - Planning, organisation or conference facilitation - Business, NGO, sports or cultural associations - Human resources.

Summary

I have been involved with business associations either as an elected President or as Director for more than 16 years with experience and representation at national, regional and local levels. I held office in both Chambers of Commerce and of Industry and have had experience in both small and large business as well as in international organisations. I have extensive leadership, organisational, facilitation and training experience – I have conceived and applied “The Enterpriser”, a leadership, management and entrepreneur organisational concept, which has been used for interventions at the United Nations (UNCTAD), the Secretariat of the International Equestrian Federation and as a component of an MBA style program in Germany. I completed two projects for UNCTAD involving a survey on trade restraints and the organisation of a component of an international conference in France.

As the elected President of Estcourt Chamber of Commerce, South Africa, for 12 consecutive years, I was instrumental in transforming the organisation into a strong lobby group for local business interests and a driving force of social change. I also represented the province in the national umbrella organisation, the South African Chamber of Business, and effected stronger local and provincial influence in national Chamber decision making. During 1993 as President of the Chamber I was selected by the community to chair the local Peace Committee which was responsible for conflict resolution between violently opposed political parties.

Due to my successful track record, I was requested to take up the full-time position as Director of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI). In this position I conducted a thorough needs analysis of services and the complex customer base, completely restructured internal operational structures (customer services, technology and communications systems), reorganised the Chamber's governing and committee structure, reoriented the chambers activities and mission statement, and revamped benefit packages (insurance policies, tendering advantages, joint purchasing).

Within 12 months of becoming Director, the PCCI became the “most active Chamber in the country,” according to the South African Chamber of Business. Other chamber activities initiated during my appointment included the creation of “E-vision”, a community initiative to assist in job creation by integrating education and entrepreneurship initiatives. This included inaugurating one of the countries first accredited Local Business Service Centres. To generate revenues, the director was responsible for organising training seminars on key topics of interest for the members, as well as designing and conducting local and regional workshops on the benefits of belonging to a business association.

In my nine years at Nestle SA (Pty) Ltd., first as Head of Personnel and then as Head of Resources Development, I was instrumental in designing, building and equipping a training resource centre, and designing and implementing country-wide competency based training interventions for Nestle employees. In addition, I was appointed as one of the local Nestle staff to the international management training team, and was assigned to four internationally staffed company productivity project teams that analysed training needs and trained senior and middle management across the country.
