Managing Director

Work Experience

1999 – 2002 Siemens plc, UK
Managing Director, Information & Communication Mobile Group

Reporting to the Board, the task was to manage the formation in the UK of a new corporate group. Information & Communication Mobile Group was created to focus and expand all activities towards mobile telecommunication network operators. The portfolio covered mobile and cordless phones, modules and network infrastructure.

Starting with 10 employees, the unit had grown to over 80 by early 2002. Market share of mobile phones grew from ~0 to 6%, the first 3rd Generation UMTS-network order was secured and cordless phones were market leader in their sector.

The business closed the 2001 business year highly profitably with revenues exceeding £150 million, up on the previous year in spite of an adverse market, and is set to continue growing faster than the market. Cash and asset management were acknowledged as best in class both locally as well as at international Group level.

Additional responsibilities included the role of Group Finance Director and General Manager for two sales units.

1997 – 1998 Siemens Nixdorf Limited, UK
Finance Director

Siemens Nixdorf Ltd. was the UK subsidiary of Siemens’ Germany based IT daughter company with global activities from manufacture and sale of mainframes, PC’s and Point-of-Sale terminals to IT software, solutions, service and outsourcing.

Seconded to the UK and appointed Finance Director, new processes were established focusing on asset/cash management and structure optimisation. The company grew by 50% to £370m and the loss in 1997 turned around to £11m profit.

By corporate decision, the company ceased trading in October 1998. The PC business was placed into a joint venture, the Retail business was sold by IPO and the rest was integrated into Siemens plc. Asked to manage this complex exercise, it was completed on time, staff motivation was kept high and through careful structuring and negotiation earned the local Siemens operation a sizeable profit.

1990 – 1996 Siemens Nixdorf AG, Germany
Commercial Director, Business Unit “Office Applications”
Commercial Director, Defence/Railways/Telecom Business

Both roles had global profit and loss responsibility and in both cases losses had to be curtailed. The business units were run as separate entities within the company

The Office Applications unit supplied office related software and the role included the financial control of activities from R&D to international sales. Over the period, losses were halved and new procedures for transparency of the business established.
The emphasis in the Defence/Railways/Telecom unit in Group HQ was on establishing and monitoring strategies and targets to maximise sales and profits. The unit achieved a break-even before a reorganisation changed the structure.

By special assignment from the Board, the ailing Canadian operation was restructured on site in Toronto. This exercise was managed from concept to realisation, including organising and implementing the closure of the subsidiary and integration of parts into Siemens Canada.
