Acted as Project Manager for a project to design and setup a new infrastructure at the New York office. Their new state-of-the-art dealing-room network had to be ready in a very short time-frame due to an office move. The network also had to be connected to the NYSE trading floor, the Chicago office and trading floor and various other market connections Trading had to be possible either from Amsterdam or New York so a new ATM core network was commissioned.

After the New York project, two more projects were executed to for network management and system performance monitoring. All projects were executed using Prince II and using MS Project for documenting the project and demonstrating the plans and the progress to the directors.

As technical project manager responsible for the implementation of a complete new infrastructure; including servers, LAN/WAN connectivity, security and new computer room, he had to ensure that the whole computer room was migrated in a staged approach over a sequence of service windows. There was no possibility of any outage during trading, so all system dependencies had to be carefully researched to ensure that after each migration all systems and applications would work perfectly. It was a very complex environment with tens of connections to market feeds, exchanges and trading systems. The company had attempted and failed to do the migration themselves and so had hired in to manage the project.
The migration was successfully completed within timescale and budget, and without a single outage during trading. Experience with Cisco switches (3500, 4908G-L3, 6509 with MSFC), routers (2500, 2600, 3600, 7200 and MSFC), PIX firewalls, Cisco VPN concentrators.

Elsevier had an NFS environment hosted on Novell Netware. This systems was core to all their data storage for all internal and external users including suppliers and customers. It was completely mission critical that this file store was available 24x7. The whole environment had to be migrated from Novell to an NT-based design. The NFS environment included Unix, Novell, NT and VAX/VMS systems. Due to the criticality of the system, the design had to be correct, but more importantly the migration plan had to be rigorously planned and executed. The solution was designed and implemented successfully. Experience with Novell Netware, Windows NT, NFS, Unix, VAX/VMS.

KPN The Hague (Technical project leader)

As technical project leader responsible for migrating the complete server farm from Novell Netware 4.11 to 5.1 including all software and hardware. This was a 24x7 environment. He was responsible for both managing the project and implementing the new environment. The project was successfully completed within the timeframe set. Experience with Novell Netware.

Project leader: The project was the migration of 800 users from DEC Pathworks to Novell NetWare 4.1. My responsibility was the detailed project co-ordination, including the planning, prioritisation, advising and reporting to the management, and the control of the project team. There were many difficulties to be overcome - specifically migrating all the users’ applications to the new servers and planning the migrations of each department round their work commitments. The project was successfully completed within the time-scale I had set with minimal impact on the users. Experience with Novell Netware 4, Windows 95, 98, NT, DEC Pathworks.
