Senior Vice President
Mondex International ( a subsidiary of Mastercard International), New Jersey, USA
August 1996 to August 2000

Launched Mondex International's (MXI) smart card business in North America and negotiated deployment of Mondex International's worldwide resources in support of specific territory initiatives. MXI annual operating budget was circa $40 million.

Built on early franchise sales success by executing several firsts in the market deployment of smart cards:

. Accomplished the first market deployment of the 'Mondex' electronic cash application in North America on a single application smart card. First franchisees to market were Wells Fargo Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank and Bank One in the US and Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Canada. These deployments required convincing the banks to make investment commitments amounting to tens of millions of dollars.

. Sold the first market deployment of two applications on the MULTOS (Multi Application Operating System) smart card in the world, to Citibank.

Promoted Mondex International's reputation as a global market leader in the smart card sector, in both the physical and electronic commerce worlds, by delivering these high profile deployments.

Sales Manager
National Westminster Bank Plc, London, UK
December 1993 to August 1996

Sold the Mondex electronic cash franchises in the United States and Canada for $50 million and $17 million respectively. Also contributed to the sale of the Australian and South African franchises. Each franchise was sold to the largest financial institutions in each territory. Achieved these results against the background of very limited market awareness of smart cards and their potential.
This achievement of franchise sales was highly profitable for NatWest Bank despite significant investment in technology development, worldwide patent protection and the creation of a global governance structure.

Successfully managed:
. The due diligence process whereby Mastercard bought a majority share holding in the newly formed Mondex International in 1996 (for an undisclosable sum which included funding for a variety of additional smart card projects)
. The sale of the US franchise in 1996 for $50 million. This sale fulfilled the $120 million franchise sales equity target required by National Westminster bank to incorporate Mondex International as an independent company in 1996.
