The clients were based in a range of industries from Nuclear power generation through medical device manufacture to high technology industries such as photonics as well as working in the NHS. The work carried out included organisational development, operational improvement activities, production management, outsourcing activities, preparation of briefing papers, training in sterilization in addition, hands on validation work has been carried out overseas and in the UK in support of medical device manufacturers. Richard also represents a number of companies in Scotland. Andersen Caledonia Ltd. – Operations Director
1997 to 2001

This start-up was funded by a family company based in the USA and UK to provide sterilisation and microbiological testing services to the healthcare industry. Customers include medical device manufacturers, hospitals, pharamceutical, biotechnology and electronics companies. I was the first employee and took the company from start up to breakeven prior to departing to set up my own consultancy practice.

First 2 years spent designing facility from scratch using an explosive and carcinogenic gas, obtaining planning permission and building the plant. This involved the development of a sophisticated process control system including considerations of softwear validation and FDA approvals. Negotiations with planners, health and safety, the fire department and the Environmental Protection Agency for necessary approvals were also completed. Following completion of plant the next 2 years were spent recruiting the team to operate plant, obtaining ISO certification and implementing first key customer contracts.

Other tasks included negotiating grants with local authorities, supporting financial operations to raise equity and debt to complete plant and making sales calls to key potential customers. Company has grown from 1 to 15 employees and is now operating at breakeven on a turnover of £600,000 p/a from a zero base. In recognition of the success of the project Richard was made board director in May 2001. He left the company in September 2001 but continues in a consultancy role acting in “business development” and in a project capacity. He continues as a Non Executive Director and shareholder in the business.
