Led data-mining project that identified the 18 legacy ERP systems accounting for 70% of external indirect spend. Using internal resources, all invoice and payment documents were extracted, data warehouse created, and structured reports produced, which were fundamental to the Indirects Purchasing strategy, Category Management, and opportunity identification.

Launched a global team e-procurement team and established a model of one-stop-shopping for all indirect purchases. The model developed by the team is utilised in a new SRM project.

Senior Purchasing Manager: Zeneca, UK
October 1994 to December 2000

Rescued outsourcing projects that had been delayed by conflicts with potential suppliers, enabling deadlines to be met for the launch of a major new blockbuster product with expected sales of $400million per year. Capital investments by the four suppliers ranged from $10-20million. Managed a follow-up project with two suppliers and external investments of $10million and EUR35million respectively.

Purchased internationally from companies in Germany, Austria, France, USA, Japan and India with regular travel to all of these. Managed an HQ team of eight staff.
Championed the management of Indirect spend and established a senior steering group to promote awareness and improvement. Presented total spend ($300million), categorised it, and won support for the appointment of Category Managers. This project was interrupted by the creation of Syngenta; and formed the basis of Syngenta’s strategy for managing Indirects.

Led an industry proposal to the WTO, to eliminate tariffs on agrochemical products, which had a targeted payback of $20million for Zeneca.

Selected an external training provider and designed courses that were not then available publicly. The course program was also implemented in AstraZeneca pharmaceuticals.
