General Manager.

UK company executing engineering, contracting and project management functions using materials handling technology from overseas sister companies.
Responsible for: Overall management and profitability of the UK business unit.
Reporting to: Divisional Operations Director (German parent).
Turnover: £4m.
Executed a full restructuring programme as part of a global reorganisation of the BMH group.


Nov 1991 - Oct 1994: Babcock Materials Handling Ltd.,
Sales Manager.

Company specialised in pneumatic and mechanical transport, storage and packing in the power, cement, minerals and allied industries.
Responsible for: Business development of bulk solids handling systems.
Reporting to: UK M.D.
Notable contracts included a cement roll press system to Nigeria (£3.4m), a gypsum milling system (£1.7m), and an Iron ore stacker reclaimer refit (£1.2m).


Jan 1990 - Nov 1991: Babcock International - Claudius Peters Ltd.,
Senior Sales Engineer.

Re-established Claudius Peters Ltd in the UK as a 2 man business. Built up business to £1.3m turnover with 6 employees until amalgamation with other Babcock companies to form Babcock Materials Handling Ltd.
Responsible for: Securing and management of bulk materials handling, storage and packing systems, specialising in pneumatic transport.
Reporting to: General Manager.
Notable contracts included a coal milling system for a cement works (£1.7m), and a kiln feed system for a cement works (£0.4m).






Jan 1989 - Dec 1989: Neu Engineering Ltd.,
Senior Project Engineer.

Preparing quotations and running projects in pneumatic materials handling applications. The business was based on continuity of personnel throughout the projects.
Most of this period taken up in the quoting, winning and execution of a £3.3m baby food handling system contract for Russia.
Invited to rejoin Babcock after 12 months.


Sept 1988 - Jan 1989: Babcock Energy Ltd., UK,
Senior Sales/Proposals Engineer.

Preparing tenders for materials handling plant in coal-fired power stations.


Aug 1987 - Aug 1988: Bateman Materials Handling Ltd., South Africa.
Senior Process Engineer.

With a colleague, started a new division of within Bateman selling pneumatic and hydraulic handling systems for bulk solids. Position as "second in command" introduced involvement in strategic planning and direction of the 7 man group.
Responsible for: Engineering, tendering, and marketing.
Returned to UK for personal reasons after 12 months.


May 1984 - August 1987: Babcock Industrial Contractors Ltd., South Africa.
Process Engineer.

Seconded to South African sister company for 3 years to develop business in materials handling systems for power stations and cement plants. Included winning and managing a new coal and ash handling plant for S.A. Breweries in Durban.



Aug 1980 - May 1984: Babcock Hydro Pneumatics Ltd.,
Proposals Engineer.

Assembling technical bids for ash handling systems in coal fired power stations. Included regular periods of troubleshooting and commissioning on site at home and abroad.



Education

Education: Thames Polytechnic: BSc (Commendation) in Mechanical Engineering.

4 year sandwich course in 6 monthly industrial/ academic modules.

U.M.I.S.T.: 2 Years of B.Sc. course in Mechanical Engineering.
