Operations / Project Business Manager - Scotland

In my previous role with ntl as Operations Manager - Scotland, I recruited, developed and empowered a team of ten Project Managers who, on a per capita basis, delivered the highest revenue and margins of any business unit in the company consistently for the past four years.

I had overall profit and loss responsibility and accountability for a circa £20M turnover business unit.

In the four years in which I managed the business unit, it consistently over achieved both revenue and profit margin targets set.

I was a member of the corporate Value Based Management Forum (VBM), which focussed on improving shareholder value of the company, and maximising our corporate worth.

It was necessary for me to develop my own financial tracking processes, to manage the unit P&L. These are now accepted as the standard for measuring the business performance, and were directly responsible for driving circa £1M of additional margin from the Scottish Projects Business during fiscal 1999 - 2000.

Workplace Technologies practised a matrix management reporting structure. Whilst being principally responsible to the Director of Projects, I also had reporting lines to the Regional Managing Director, Director of Corporate Services and Finance Director. Apart from the team of Project Managers who directly report to me, I also had local responsibilities for Finance, Purchasing and Logistics, Administration, Training (including apprentices), Direct Labour, Property and General Management.

Workplace Technologies have a copyrighted Project Management Methodolgy. I was directly involved in its development, and responsible for its implementation within the Scottish Business Unit.

Summary of Experience

Since completing my initial training with British Rail some twenty years ago, I have gained extensive experience in providing support and services to a wide variety of customers.

In this time I have gained considerable commercial insight into the service industry and have managed teams of from one to sixty staff.

My Technical background and training enables me to interact at all levels with both clients and workforce.

My budgetary and commercial experience ensures that services provided are both cost effective and profitable.

Objectives

In the past fifteen years, my career has centred on joining companies in their early stages of development or, in the case of Grant & Taylor, when their traditional business was stagnating and stalled. I have used my experience in General Business Management to build and develop teams and professional working practises to enable them to develop to their full potential. My knowledge of the IT industry sector has enabled me to assist in developing their strategic direction, whilst also focussing on maximising their existing capabilities.

As Workplace Technologies have now developed to their current full potential, and have been purchased by the ntl: Group, I felt that I had contributed as much as is likely to be required of me. Also, my own personal requirements to be in a position to shape and direct the business had been somewhat diluted. I was offered a Directorship to stay with ntl, but, in a company with over 25,000 staff, and several hundred Directors, the role would have been in name only, without the challenge or empowerment to make a difference

I was looking for a new challenge in a similar General Management / Operational Director role, where I could put my experience to best use. My options were to either move to another small company and start the process again, or to start my own business, with a view to making my experience more widely available in a consultancy / interim management role.

I feel that a role in Project / Business Management Consultancy, either as part of an organisation, which provides such a service, or in a self employed external contract role, would be my best option. In such an instance, I could then fully devote my time to the business development from a neutral, unbiased viewpoint.

I have recently, (January 2001), registered my own company which allows me to offer both consultancy and contract service to clients on a basis which best suits my own requirements.
